Program Details:
The project was first put together 5 years ago when we took a
medical team to Guyana to undertake opportunistic screening for
diabetes and hypertension. This was done as a result of cries for
help from nurses in Guyana to Guyanese nurses in England. The
project was very successful as we were able to screen over 500
people during a two week period, as well as hold a conference for
health care professionals and do TV and radio programs. In November
2003 we are planning to take the team to St Lucia for two weeks with
the same program. We will be visiting various parts of the island
screening for diabetes and high blood pressure. We also hope to
visit 2-3 schools to talk about diabetes. We intend holding a
conference, and as we will be on the island during World Diabetes
Day we hope to participate in any program being put on by the St
Lucia Diabetes Association. The project is funded by fundraising
among the Guyanese, St Lucian and other Caribbean communities in
England, as well as pharmaceutical companies. All team members (a
diabetologist, general practitioner,2 diabetes specialist nurses,
registered nurse and a chiropodist) are giving up two weeks of their
annual leave and doing activities to help raise the funds. Our
specific needs is that we need to raise £9000-1000 to pay for
flights, accommodation, medicines (which will be given free of
charge to the public) literature, chiropody instruments (we hope to
train some nurses in simple foot care) and glucometers. We are
looking to local companies to help fund some activities e.g. the
conference. We are looking at the project being long term, working
with local Drs and nurses and the Diabetes Association. We will be
grateful for any donation, however small. |
