St. Lucia Diabetes
Project - August 2005 Trip |

Diabetes Project and other volunteers from the United States will be

diabetes clinic sessions while visiting various clinics and medical
facilities around St. Lucia.

THE FACTS & URGENCY:
During a recent visit to St Lucia, the Chief Medical Officer divulged
that the mortality rate from diabetic complications in St. Lucia is
high and the amputation rate is also extremely high. This latter fact
was confirmed by data collected during a visit in 2003 by our medical
team.
St Lucia does not have a podiatry service. It appears to be the norm to
amputate peripheral limbs of diabetic patients once problems develop,
rather than trying to heal, mainly because of scarcity of resources to
facilitate the healing process.
Training a podiatrist is costly and takes two years. Furthermore, more
than one is needed to alleviate the current sad situation in St. Lucia.
In November 2003, the St. Lucia Diabetes Project team members
comprising six medical professionals visited St Lucia to undertake
opportunistic screening for diabetes and hypertension. They also dealt
with educational issues of both local public and health officials.
During our 2003 visit, the team's Podiatrist trained 30 nurses on how
to examine, recognise, assess, and treat simple diabetic foot problems.
Some of those trained nurses went on to set up foot clinics, and others
use the skills opportunistically.

Project Title: Hand and
Heart in Handicraft
The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities in the
Southern region of Saint Lucia has initiated the Hands and Heart
Handicraft Project at Balenbouche Estate. The project began on
February 1st, 2005 with the main goal to equip persons with
disabilities and caregivers with basic handicraft skills. By
developing these skills in individuals we hope to increase
socialization through a friendly environment, generate income, and
encourage empowerment though self-sustainability.
The Handicraft group caters to 12 individuals who have various
disabilities as well as caregivers. They meet every Tuesday from 9
am until 3 pm at Balenbouche Estate. With additional support we hope
to increase our training days to 2-3 days per week. The main
handicraft projects include pot holders, crocheted clothes,
cushions, mirrors using indigenous materials, bamboo/coconut
kitchenware, stone soap dishes, and straw baskets.
Timeframe:
Over the next 7 months we will be busy exposing and developing
skills in handicrafts with our trainees. From December 9th-11th we
will be holding a Christmas Market at Balenbouche Estate that will
showcase our finished products and celebrate our accomplishments as
well as the Holiday season. In the future we hope to increase our

LHL Kids Club
We have decided
that it is time that we get the Kids involved. We need to teach our
younger generation the importance of caring for one another as this
will give them a solid foundation for caring about themselves and us
since our world will be governed by them some day soon.
In order to achieve that goal we are putting together a section of
this site which will be dedicated to kids. They can log on and learn
about how other kids live in St. Lucia and what the love to do and
their needs. Get a Pen Pal, Competitions, Fund Raising Events.
This will be coming soon. Any thoughts or ideas or contributions to
this section of the site, please let us know by emailing us at
info@lhlproject.org.

National Geographic
Magazine Library Project
This is an effort to bring quality reading
to the schools of St. Lucia. National Geographic Magazines can be
used in several areas of education - geography, history, culture, world
issues, photography and art. Creating a library dedicated to
ensuring that these valuable magazines are accessible by the students
in the St. Lucian schools, is a very powerful way of expanding the
minds of the young adults in St. Lucia. |

|
This project is being headed up by GlaceGrafix,
LLC. Anyone who knows of any other schools in the island that
would appreciate such a contribution to their current library or need
to start a library, please contact Ms. Keitha Glace at
keitha@glacegrafix.com.
For persons who would like to contribute their
National Geographic Magazine collection to this project please contact
us as well at

or
