Micoud Arts and Literacy Institute (MALI) an After
School Arts Club, has created a program that benefits children
outside of the traditional art class. The Institute was
conceptualized from the belief that the arts provide children with
meaningful ways to explore their world and develop literacy skills
that become useful and necessary to succeed in other academic
subjects. Research on literacy has demonstrates that development of
literacy begins very early, long before the child is able to read
and write. Every Thursday for one hour throughout the school
year, children age 4-7years from Micoud village come together in a
community-based facility with a facilitator to participate in music,
dance, art and drama activities through a multi-sensory approach. In
addition to giving their art education opportunities a boost, it is
hoped also that, MALI will also provides a safe, fun place for
children to hang out. It is hoped that the progress and
effectiveness of the programme will be monitored.
Through
training parents will be encouraged to become facilitators of the
program and that will indirectly get them more involved in nurturing
their child’s education at home. The response from the children
to MALI has been very encouraging as we’ve seen them become more
open, confident and more expressive.
Vision Mico
Arts and Literacy Institute (MALI) will be seen as an after school
club offering kids an opportunity to explore their artistic
abilities, build motivation and confidence that will enhance their
literacy abilities.
Goal To foster child
development through the arts, in order to allow the children to
become confident and competent citizens. |
