Program Details:

Adult Day Care Centre. This adult Day Care Center will help keep Older persons in their homes and communities where they belong, and want to be and not in Residential Care. These Older Persons will no longer be left alone when their family is at work. They will benefit from companionship, Participate in sessions to unite their spiritual and social well being, increase their knowledge in areas relevant to them. The activities, which will be conducted at the Center, will give the Older Person confidence enhancing their self esteem and generally improve their quality of life. The Aim of the Adult Day Care is preventative-as well as rehabilitative. It will prevent Older Persons from having to enter Institutions, encourage, and strengthen the integration of older people into their families and local communities. It is very valuable for Older Persons to live within their communities. Older people welcome services that enable them to continue living in their own communities.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The project is dedicated to the establishment of an Adult Day Care Facility for Older Persons. These services will be provided to Older Persons in a congregate setting for less than 24 hours a day. It is hoped that the project will be developed in several phases.

A variety of services and levels of care allow programmes to be tailored to meet specialty needs. A center can be established to meet most identified community health needs but during the first phase, the National Council of and for Older Persons Adult Day Care Center, will offer social-recreational and educational activities.

Services will not be provided on a drop in basis, as it is hoped that after attending the centre for a few days, members will quickly realize the advantages of group stimulation, social interaction, and quality of services offered there.

A nutritious meal will be served daily as some older persons find that they cannot prepare food as easily as they could when they were younger, and for some, two meals a day is not possible. Some older persons may not eat well for economic reasons because they cannot afford it. The meals will be provided taking into account their special needs e.g.

1) Diabetic

2) Low salt

3) Drink-hydration

Persons, who attend the Centre, will be contacted through:

(a) Health Care professionals,

(b) Family and Friends,

(c) Club 60 Programmes

(d) Other Agencies

The day Care Centre will be situated in La CIery, in the old sub-Police Station building. The facility will operate from Monday to Saturday from 9.am to 6pm. At present the building is in disrepair but is estimated that renovations to the building to make it safe for older person will cost at least $ 160,000.00.

The renovations will include, complete redesigning of the building to suit the purpose for which it is air marked, and will include a working room, which should accommodate the members all at once comfortably. This working room will also serve as a conference and social activity area. The refurbished building will have a ramp to accommodate wheel chair bound clients. The toilet and rest room will be redone with specification to meet the needs of older persons. The entire building will be older person friendly. This Project has not been implemented as we are awaiting response of the Cabinet for use of the Building. However some of the needs for the Centre would be Project financed.

All costs are detailed in Eastern Caribbean Dollars

Additional Comments:

We thank LHL for such a wonderful initiative. it will give us the opportunity for publicity because we are based here in St. Lucia and being a small charitable organization we only receive a subvention from government and this takes care of mostly administrative work so we have to tap to other organizations to help meet the needs of Older Persons. so thank you for considering the Council.
