We are a
charitable organisation, which was set up to raise funds to help in
the development of Anse-La-Raye. In summary, the main objectives of
the group were to link all Anse-la-Rayans living in the UK
culturally and socially; to facilitate in the development and
improvement of the local community; and to help increase the profile
of Anse-La-Raye in general. |

Our main aim at
the time of forming the association was to raise sufficient funds to
finance an ambulance service for the district and simultaneously
contribute to the regeneration of the area, in the aftermath of the
hurricane. Our perseverance, dedication and enthusiasm have paid
off, and the Canaries Association has since been providing financial
contribution and other valuable and important service to its
community. |

The overall objective
of the group
is to assist
the Gros-Islet community in whatever modest way possible, but more
importantly to focus on supporting the most deprived people in the
village and surrounding areas. The group
has since
established a motto – “from a very small contribution or seed
much can grow or be achieved”, and this became the foundation
upon which they
carry out their
activities. |

The St. Lucian
Association’s overall aim is to assist targeted areas in St. Lucia
where needs have been identified, respond to request for help or
assistance, and identify and support other needy projects and
activities within our community. However, since the birth of
the district groups e.g. Canaries Assoc., Anse-La-Raye Assoc. and
now Unity, the St. Lucian Association has played a less involved
role, preferring to let Unity take on the more strategic and
directive responsibilities in deciding on major activities and
events. This change although significant, has not reduced the
‘Main Association’s’ influence in any fundamental way and the St.
Lucian Association of London (1963) still holds a central position
within Unity. |

Unity’s
Vision and Long-term Plans
Unity has several
fund raising activities and initiatives. If you would like to
contribute to any these programs, please email one of our committee
members at the emails shown above.
Unity has several
ambitious plans in addition to a number of developmental goals that
it would like to achieve in the future. Some of the key priorities
are to: -
-
Involve,
communicate and support our communities in St. Lucia and the UK;
-
Act as the
voice of our St. Lucian community in the UK;
-
Encourage
our UK community to support our objectives and participate in our
activities;
-
Work with
other Caribbean communities and charitable groups;
-
Achieve
charitable status;
-
Seek
sponsorship for some of our key activities, in order to generate
more funds for charitable and worthy causes;
-
Continue
to raise funds to meet our objectives and assist our
communities.
-
Create a
website to encourage and improve dialogue and communication with
our members and community and simultaneously expand our
information base; and
-
Develop a
twinning programme between a UK local government authority, St.
Lucia and Unity, to encourage visits by individuals and groups to
and from the linked island, particularly by children and young
people, and to develop personal contacts to broaden the mutual
understanding of the cultural, recreational, educational and
commercial activities of the linked areas.
